What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?
Cranial Sacral Therapy is a method of working with the cranial sacral system in order to detect the stressors on the central nervous system that create the dis-ease or dysfunction. This technique allows the therapist to balance the brain chemistry and energy flow to realign the brain and the spinal column releasing the blockages in the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and the spinal column promoting the body to heal naturally.
What is the History of Cranial Sacral Therapy?
For many years doctors and scientists believed that the bones of the skull did not move. However Dr. William Sutherland in his studies believed that there was movement in the cranial bones and he began to teach many osteopaths about his theories. After taking a course developed by Dr. Sutherland, Dr. John Upledger reflected on this information and began his quest to discover the purpose and function of the pulsing rhythms that he had witnessed years ago during surgery. How did the movement of the cranial bones and the pulsing rhythms affect the function of the body was the question. After many years of research he uncovered the mystery and created the Upledger Institute to teach the public about his discoveries and to explain the function of the cranial sacral system. In Dr. Upledger’s work he realized how healing touch can track the pulsing rhythms and assist in the evaluation and releasing of the constrictions blocking the functions of the central nervous system from the cranial bones to the sacrum. In the Upledger method he created his 10 step protocol as a guide in balancing these rhythms and functions within the brain and the spinal column.
How Does Cranial Sacral Therapy Promote Health?
Through the connection of healing touch the therapist gently holds the different positions so the bones of the skull and sacrum can easily and gently move back to their original state. As the bones move the natural flow of the cerebrospinal fluid flows through the body from the brain down to the tailbone alleviating pressure within the brain, the skull bones, on the joints, lengthening the spinal column and releasing pressure on the pelvic and sacrum area. It also clears and opens the respiratory system including the thoracic and the diaphragm.
Since the cranial sacral system is important to the functioning and development of the brain and the spinal column when it is out of balance it can cause many sensory and neurological problems. During a Cranial Sacral Therapy session the individual may experience a deep relaxation due to the releasing of the healing endorphins and the release of the blockages in the central nervous system. The balancing of the brain chemistry and energy flow in the left and right brain while charging the master glands, the hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal as well as the 12 neurotransmitter channels and clearing the memory grid of trauma are all part of bringing the body back to optimal performance and health.
